Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman Welcomes Maria A. Scungio to Its Intellectual Property and Litigation Practices
We are pleased to welcome Maria A. Scungio to our firm. Her considerable knowledge and experience - as an accomplished trademark practitioner, litigator, and educator - builds upon the significant strength of our Intellectual Property and Litigation practices.
Maria will primarily practice in our Trademark Group and our Litigation & Early Dispute Resolution Group. She will assist clients in all aspects of their domestic and international trademark, copyright, and design protection concerns, including, searching and clearance, applications for registration, portfolio management, enforcement and defense, and negotiating and drafting licensing, assignment and coexistence agreements. Maria has extensive experience in advising U.S. and multi-national clients across numerous industries, including Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, and mid-size corporations. She has managed diverse portfolios totaling nearly 30,000 trademarks.
Maria also will continue her practice as a skilled litigator in federal courts nationwide, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and other courts and administrative tribunals. Among other experience, she has handled cases involving intellectual property, cybersquatting, and commercial disputes. In addition, Maria has represented clients in domain name disputes and has advised clients on court actions, administrative proceedings, and enforcement measures in other countries.
Maria’s practice also includes counseling on advertising clearance and other promotional programs, counterfeiting, and other IP issues. She has extensive experience in complex IP due diligence projects for spin-offs, mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions, for a wide variety of consumer brands.
The clients Maria advises are large and small, in a broad cross-section of industries, including skincare, apparel, footwear, jewelry, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, entertainment, healthcare services, and fiber laser products, among others.
Maria is also a lecturer and writer and has been recognized by the World Trademark Review 1000 Directory of Leading Trademark Professionals in New York for both “Prosecution and Strategy” and “Enforcement and Litigation,” and she has also been recognized in Who’s Who Legal. She is an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University School of Law where she teaches Trademark Law and Unfair Competition.
Maria attended Fordham University School of Law (JD 1993, member, International Law Journal) and University of Pennsylvania (B.A./M.A. with Honors, History and Sociology of Science, 1987). At the start of her career, Maria was a law clerk to the Honorable Jane A. Restani at the U.S. Court of International Trade.
