Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman is Hosting a Federal Bar Council Program Concerning Music, Copyright Law, and Artificial Intelligence

03.10.2025

Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman (CLL) is hosting a Federal Bar Council (FBC) continuing legal education (CLE) program and panel discussion concerning music, copyright law, and artificial intelligence (AI) titled “Making Music - Copyright and Artificial Intelligence.”

The program will explore the legal and policy challenges of applying copyright law to AI-generated music, including the following topics:

How does training an AI model on copyrighted music actually work?

What are the copyright implications of the training process?

What are the real-world impacts of music generating AI and how are the stakeholders – musicians, record labels, AI platforms, and others – addressing them?

Second Circuit Senior Judge Denny Chin will moderate the panel discussion.  Three practitioners involved with cutting edge developments in the music AI field will participate in the panel discussion, including CLL partner Jonathan King, Carla Miller, Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs at Universal Music Group, and Gary Greenstein of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

The program will take place on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at CLL’s offices at 114 West 47th Street, 21st Floor. A wine and cheese reception begins at 5:15 pm, with the panel discussion running from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Registrants will receive 1.5 Transitional/Non-transitional New York CLE credits in the area of Professional Practice.

The program is free for Federal Bar Council members and $112.50 for non-members (with a discount offered under FBC’s Financial Hardship Policy).
